Niverville Town Council has announced a new socioeconomic development policy that will provide tax incentives to new businesses on Main Street, daycare facilities, and senior housing facilities.

Mayor Myron Dyck says this new policy will help businesses wanting to construct new buildings or expand existing buildings.

“We are going to be granting back the municipal share of the taxes that would be generated for any new building that would be constructed for a new business, for daycare spaces for children, or life lease housing for seniors. Meeting those three needs in our community.”

Dyck says council hopes this policy will instill confidence in people who want to develop in Niverville. He says Niverville has had economic development policies in the past that focused on different areas of town, and it was important that this one touched on daycare.

“In the last three or four months especially there has been quite a demand for daycare with our existing daycare provider saying that for after school programming they weren't going to have adequate space for existing children, which has prompted other business leaders to come forward, and we have had private individuals come forward. We know that daycare is a need.”

Dyck says Niverville Town Council based this policy heavily on similar economic development policies from other communities. He notes projects that are currently under construction as of May 1 will also qualify for the tax benefits.

Niverville Heritage Centre spokesperson Gordon Daman says this economic development policy will help facilities in their first three to five years of operation which is often a tight time for new businesses. He notes the Niverville Heritage Centre will benefit from this new policy because their life lease building is still under construction.

“We are very excited that council has taken the opportunity to not only recognize the importance of encouraging further business investment, but actually expanding the scope of that business investment beyond traditional business to social enterprise. They have specifically highlighted seniors housing and daycare, both of which are part of our campus.”
