A local man is putting on a beach volleyball tournament Sunday afternoon for a friend's cancer treatments.

Organizer Marcel Laferriere says he got to know his good friend Colton Plett playing volleyball with him in junior high. He notes in 2010 Colton found out he had a cancerous brain tumour.

"In 2011 he started losing some ability on the left side of his body, it was minor but it did take him out of sports. For years he went through a couple dozen chemotherapy treatments, then just recently it stared affecting the right side of his body and that is when it got a little more serious, when it started limiting him to part time when he couldn't work 40 hours a week anymore."

Laferriere says Colton just returned from a two week trip to Mexico for specialty treatments and will be going back for another two stints. He notes Colton got married six months ago so it has been an incredibly difficult time.

Laferriere says because he got to know Colton playing volleyball a tournament just seemed like a great way to raise money for him.

"The one court is going to be strictly for a tournament bracket. The other one is going to be for people who don't to play in a tournament but just want to have some fun with their friends and family playing volleyball."

Laferriere notes there is also a bake sale, silent auction, barbecue, and 50/50 draw. He says all of the money will go towards Colton's trips to Mexico for treatments.
