The Steinbach Fire Department is undergoing a ventilation remediation project aimed at improving the long-term health and safety of local firefighters. 

Deputy Fire Chief Ron Chausse is also serving as the project manager. He says the City of Steinbach is investing $367,000 to upgrade and remediate the existing ventilation and exhaust systems throughout the apparatus floor, maintenance, and gear areas. 

The construction engineering firm overseeing the project is NOVA 3 Engineering Ltd., while PennLite Construction and Apex-Atlas Roofing are completing the work. 

Chausse says the project includes mechanical, electrical, and roofing upgrades needed to modernize the fire hall's ventilation and exhaust systems. 

“The ventilation remediation project adds another important layer of protection by improving air quality within the fire hall and removing diesel exhaust and other airborne contaminants at their source.” 

New diesel exhaust system 

One of the major components of the project is the installation of Nederman's emergency vehicle diesel exhaust source-capture system. 

“Steinbach is one of the first communities in Manitoba to install the latest generation of this technology, which captures diesel exhaust directly at the source before it can enter the station environment.”

Chausse says firefighters can also return from emergency calls carrying contaminants on their protective equipment and clothing. He notes that the Steinbach Fire Department follows established best practices to help reduce exposure, including routinely cleaning, inspecting and maintaining firefighting gear. 

“Together, regular gear decontamination, proper maintenance, and modern ventilation systems help reduce occupational health risks and provide firefighters with a cleaner, healthier workplace.” 

Work continues without disrupting operations 

Despite the construction, Chausse says the department continues to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with work being coordinated internally to avoid disruptions to emergency response. 

Overall, Chausse says the project represents a significant investment in the long-term health and safety of Steinbach's firefighters. 

“These ventilation and diesel exhaust system upgrades provide another important layer of protection by improving indoor air quality and reducing occupational exposure to harmful contaminants, ensuring firefighters have a safe and healthier workplace while serving the community.”
