The Mayor of Steinbach says he is humbled to be named President for Association of Manitoba Municipalities.

Chris Goertzen takes over the role, following the resignation of Doug Dobrowolski, who is seeking the Progressive Conservative nomination in the riding of Dawson Trail.

"Doug has done tremendous work for municipalities across Manitoba," says Goertzen. "Doug has done excellent work promoting the importance of municipalities, promoting good policy that will help municipalities do their job and so they're big shoes to fill."

Goertzen was elected to serve on the AMM Board of Directors in November, 2010 and was elected Vice President in November, 2014. In accordance with AMM bylaws, the Board has appointed Goertzen to serve until November, 2016. Goertzen is also the current Chair of the AMM Cities Caucus.

"I'm humbled and I appreciate the support of the Executive and the entire directorship of AMM," says Goertzen. "I look forward very much to seeing all the different municipalities across Manitoba, helping them out, at the same time continuing my important work here in Steinbach."

Goertzen says he wants to continue the good work of making sure the government has good policies which allow municipalities to not only serve constituents and communities but also make sure they're being efficient at the same time.

Goertzen adds being named President will be a good thing for Steinbach.

"It really allows Steinbach to continue to have strong influence provincewide when it comes to what we're doing, not only for municipalities but dealing with the province," he says. "It will bode well for the city, it will bode well for our region and we'll make sure that we not only serve our citizens well but we'll serve the entire province and municipalities well."

Meanwhile, Dobrowolski says Goertzen is very capable of taking over as President. It is expected to be late July before a new Vice President is named for AMM.
