There is support, connection and healing for those who have experienced the heartbreak of losing a baby — and it's found right here in our community.
Angel Baby
Angel Baby, a local organization, brings compassion for parents, families and individuals who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth or infant loss.
Candace Loewen, program facilitator, hopes to bring healing to those grieving.
“We run two separate programs throughout the month,” she says.
Those two programs are the Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support Group which is run the first Tuesday of every month, and the Pregnancy After Loss Support Group (PALS), which is held the third Tuesday of every month. Both programs are run out of Unit E - 98 Brandt Street at 7 p.m.
“We find that a lot of the moms that come to the original (pregnancy and infant loss support group), do end up getting pregnant again. And then you deal with a whole separate panel of issues and anxieties going into pregnancy.”
Alongside their support groups, Angel Baby also supplies care packages to local hospitals and clinics. These packages offer comfort items and resources to families and individuals immediately following the loss of a baby.
Living with grief
Loewen and her husband lost their 20-week-old baby in 2011.
“Part of my grief process was making sure his memory stayed alive,” Loewen explains.
“I didn’t want people to forget that he existed.”
Through Angel Baby, Loewen has turned her own heartbreak into a source of healing for others — creating a safe space for grief to be acknowledged, memories to be preserved, and stories to be shared.
A Walk to Remember
On Sunday, Oct. 5, the organization will host its third annual ‘A Walk to Remember’ at the Steinbach Heritage Cemetary — route will begin at the Angel Monument.
“It’s a good space to connect with people that are walking a journey that’s really lonely,” Loewen notes.
Loewen says grief can make you feel isolated, and the walk aims to help people feel connected by honouring the little lives lost too soon.
“It’s not just parents that are coming to walk in honour of their baby. Friends come, grandparents come, cousins, siblings, they come.”
A Walk to Remember Schedule:
3 p.m. Registration/Check In
3:15 p.m. Remembrance Ceremony
3:30 p.m. Walk
4 p.m. Refreshments & Fellowship

“I hope people walk away with a sense of peace, to know that they’ve got people in their corner, they’re not alone, and that these babies’ lives were valuable.”
For families carrying the weight of loss, Angel Baby offers not just support — but a reminder that their grief matters, and that healing is possible, one step at a time.
