La Broquerie council recently gave third reading to their 2024 financial plan.

Reeve Ivan Normandeau says they get most of their funding from property taxes, and that they are going up this year.

“Unfortunately, they go up just to keep up with inflation.”

Homeowners within the LUD of La Broquerie will see a property tax increase of 5.5 percent this year, or an increase of roughly $123 for the average home assessed at $316,000.

Homeowners within the rural area of La Broquerie will see a property tax increase of 9.4 percent this year, or an increase of roughly $183.00 for the average home assessed at $280,000.

As for the projects La Broquerie is working on, capital expenditures for 2024 are estimated to cost $7.5 million.

These capital projects include the St. Joseph West Trail at $337,500, the HyLife Centre ice plant project at $1.2 million, and the biggest of all, the lagoon wastewater upgrade at $5 million.

Normandeau adds that the Loewen Blvd upgrade is also a bigger project council is taking on this year.

“It's about $600,000, but it's a shared road with the RM of Ste. Anne, so we're splitting the cost with them and a small portion with the RM of Hanover.”

He explains why Loewen Blvd. is a great project to move forward on.

"We always need to upgrade the roads, so it's just something we found our priority. And that's a heavily traveled road, so I thought it was a great thing to focus on.”

Eastgate Drive improvements are also in the plan, but only if a development goes through there.

“Right now, the development is on hold, so we haven't heard anything about that development going through yet.”
