Mitchell is set to host the 4th annual Dick Penner Memorial hockey tournament with 11 U13 teams coming from all over Manitoba to participate.

Steph Wiens, Fundraising Coordinator for Mitchell Minor Hockey, says this weekend is special for recognizing a special member of the community. "Dick Penner was a pillar in our community," Wiens explains. "As a bus driver, someone involved in the church, and a huge promoter of community sports and kids in general, it's a joy to honor his legacy. To get a bunch of kids and people together to enjoy hockey for a whole weekend, there's no better way to do it."

While the U13 teams are the entertainment, Wiens knows that the history of Mitchell hockey will be on display with many alumni, and those with ties to the program through the years will be around to enjoy the festivities. "We see so many people involved in the tournament who just want to be a part of the day. It's testimony to the importance of hockey in Mitchell."

"There's a ton of stuff going on for the whole weekend that everyone can enjoy," says an excited Wiens. "There's a silent auction prize table, 50/50 going on throughout which will support Mitchell minor hockey, the Patio Grill has our canteen which means great food and it's just amazing to see the community come out to gather together."

The tournament is starting Friday morning at 9:00 am and goes through to the final game on Sunday, all at the Mitchell Arena.
