A man from Winnipeg is in police custody after breaking into the Golden West offices in Steinbach earlier this week.

On Monday at 10:08 pm, Steinbach RCMP was dispatched to a break and enter at Golden West at the corner of Highway 12 and Highway 52. The complainant and property representative reported that a male had broken in and was now trying to leave on foot.

RCMP officers attended and located the male at 7-11. He was arrested as a result of displaying signs of being under the influence of drugs.

Following the arrest, the property representative noticed a second individual standing outside the radio station, wearing a reflective vest, with the words 'NEWS MEDIA' on the back. The individual stated that he was a security guard for the building. Realizing that this was a lie, the representative called 911.

By the time police returned to the scene, the second male had broken into the building and was still inside. The male was located on the third floor.

Police officers attempted to arrest him, but the man ran down the staircase, which was blocked at the bottom floor. Police then observed that the male was holding a box cutter to his wrist. Officers responded accordingly and the male was eventually placed under arrest and escorted to the Steinbach RCMP detachment. Police say the accused was also displaying signs of being under the influence of drugs. He had several items in his possession, belonging to Golden West.

Thirty-eight-year-old Fraser Schmidt of Winnipeg has been charged and remanded into custody and will appear in court on Wednesday for two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, break and enter with intent, two counts of resisting/ obstructing a peace officer, two counts of failing to comply with a probation order and three counts of failing to comply with release order conditions.

The first male, arrested at 7-11 was not charged.
