With the arrival of September, school speed zones are back in effect. Steinbach RCMP Community Constable Dennis Redikop reminds drivers to slow down in designated areas around schools where signs limit the speed to 30 kilometres per hour, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The fine for going 20 kilometres an hour over the speed limit is $312. Redikop says increased attention to safety should extend beyond just the school zones.

"To all the motorists, be aware, once school does start, to watch for kids, watch for anybody going to school or going home from school. We want to have everyone come home safely and go to school safely. Kids love to play and they don't necessarily check the road and it can quickly become an unfortunate event."

Classes get underway Wednesday in the Hanover and Seine River school divisions as well as DSFM, the French school division. Redikop says that also means school buses will be back on the roads and he urges people to always stop when a bus has its stop lights flashing.

"Every year, we have a concern about people driving past a stopped school bus when the stop lights are on. In a lot of Hanover school buses, cameras are installed and we, unfortunately, do get a lot of footage where motorists do pass the stopped school buses."
