Seniors need to be wary of another wave of heat forecasted to hit Steinbach this week

Community Resource Coordinator for the Pat Porter Active Living Centre, Carrie Bilawchuk, cautions that long spells of 30-degree temperatures can be dangerous for the elderly. However, she says those seeking respite from the heat in an air-conditioned building are invited to come and visit the Centre.

“Our doors are always open from 8:00am-4:00pm for seniors to come in and do a puzzle, grab a book, or have a coffee. They are more than welcome to come in and cool off.”

Bilawchuk advises seniors: “Stay out of the sun as much as you can, especially during peak times.” She reminds that any errands are better run in early mornings or late evenings to avoid the hot sun, adding that wearing hats and drinking water are also good preventative measures.

Warm weather does affect everyone, acknowledges Bilawchuk, but seniors are especially susceptible to heat and dehydration. She adds families with elderly parents or grandparents should be wary they have some place cool to go to avoid any negative complications because of the weather.
