The Steinbach Regional baseball and fastpitch teams are Zone 13 champions. The SRSS defeated the Niverville Panthers 21-2 Thursday afternoon in Mitchell and advance to the MHSAA's Provincial High School Baseball Championship June 1st, 2nd & 3rd in Glenboro & Baldur. The Sabres downed the 96'ers 14-1 Wednesday in Landmark and earned a spot in the Provincial High School Fastpitch Championship June 2nd & 3rd in Ile des Chenes hosted by Dakota Collegiate. 


The Steinbach Regional football teams wrapped up Spring Camp on Thursday with a pair of exhibition games against the Grant Park Pirates at A.D. Penner Park. Angelo Stoyanov threw three touchdown passes as the SRSS junior varsity team defeated Grant Park 34-22. Ryan Martin, Celino Hildebrand, Owen Medeiros, Dylan Godlewski and Ryder Doerksen all found the end zone for the Sabres. The SRSS varsity team fell 21-0 to the Pirates. Gavin Neufeld had two interceptions, Mason Funk had a sack and Jackson Gamaldo had a fumble recovery for the Sabres. The JV and varsity teams will begin preparing for the 2023 Winnipeg High School Football League season on August 26th.


The Carillon Sultans suffered their first loss of the 2023 Winnipeg Senior Baseball League season Thursday night. The Sultans fell 13-4 to the West Winnipeg A's at Charleswood Park. Carillon is 2-1 and will face the South Winnipeg Longhorns Monday night back at Charleswood Park. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped a 3-2 decision to the Kane County Cougars. Dondrei Hubbard and Jonah Davis hit back-to-back home runs for the Cougars in the top of the second inning. Goldeyes third baseman Dayson Croes singled in the first inning and that extended his hitting streak to nine games. The Fish will open a three-game weekend series against the Sioux Falls Canaries tonight at Shaw Park. 


Samuel Montembeault made 27 saves as Canada defeated Finland 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2023 World Men's Hockey Championship in Tampere. Jack Quinn, Samuel Blais, Michael Carcone and Tyler Toffoli did the goal scoring for the Canadians who will face Latvia in the semifinals. The United States will take on Germany in the other semi. 


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers play their first of two exhibition games Saturday when they meet the Edmonton Elks at Commonwealth Stadium. Winnipeg will also face the Saskatchewan Roughriders Friday, June 2nd at IG Field. The Blue Bombers yesterday transferred running back Jonathan Rosery to the retired list.


Dean North of Carman won the first Professional Golfers’ Association of Manitoba tournament of the season Wednesday at the Rossmere Country Club in Winnipeg. North fired a three-over par 73 and finished one shot ahead of Patrick Law of Minnedosa & Bret Thompson of Winnipeg at the Titleist & FootJoy Spring Classic. Gavin March of the host club and Cory Kartusch of St. Charles rounded out the top five shooting 75. The next PGA of Manitoba event will be the Sunice & Bobby Jones Pro Lady Tournament to be held June 19th at the Bel Acres Golf & Country Club.
