The defending Manitoba Junior Hockey League champion Steinbach Pistons got power play goals from David Cote, Brandon Funk and Grady Hoffman and defeated the Portage Terriers 4-1 at the HyLife Centre in La Broquerie. James Fuchs had the other Pistons goal. Steinbach’s Cole Plowman made 31 saves. Niverville lost 7-3 to the Flyers in Winkler. Nathan Brown, Ty Kennett and Michael Debrito scored for the Nighthawks who gave up four second period goals to the Flyers.


Andrew Dyck and Cole Martens each had two goals and two assists as the Red River Mudbugs downed the St. Clements Gators 7-2 in the lone Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League game Friday night in St. Jean. Andy Boger, Jonah Neufeld and Axton Hyra also scored for the Mudbugs. Gavin Winram and Ryan Pellaers replied for the Gators.


Aidan Avontay and Evan Leeson each had a goal and an assist as the Beausejour Comets doubled up on the North Winnipeg Satelites 4-2.


Calyb Moore and Luc De Gagne scored in the shootout to lift the Eastman Selects 4-3 over the Pembina Valley Hawks. Easton Gaffray had a pair of goals in regulation for the Selects.


The United States downed host Sweden 6-2 in the gold medal game at the 2024 World Junior Hockey Championship in Gothenburg. Czechia beat Finland 8-5 in the bronze medal game. The 2025 World Juniors will be held in Ottawa.


The 2024 World Women's U18 Hockey Championship begins today in Zug, Switzerland. Canada will play its preliminary round opener this afternoon at 1pm against Germany. Defender Avery Pickering of St. Adolphe and forward Sara Manness of La Salle are on Team Canada’s roster.


Brandon’s Kristen Campbell made 29 saves and Ste. Anne’s Jocelyne Larocque assisted on Emma Maltais’ shorthanded go-ahead goal 6:34 into the third period as Toronto defeated New York 3-2 in the lone PWHL game.


First place in the NHL belongs to the Winnipeg Jets. Laurent Brossoit made 38 saves as Winnipeg defeated the Anaheim Ducks 3-1. Nikolaj Ehlers, Nate Schmidt with his first of the season and Cole Perfetti did the goal scoring for the Jets who have won five in a row and extended their points streak to a franchise-record 11 games. Winnipeg is 25-9-4 and will wrap up its three-game road on Sunday against the Arizona Coyotes.
