Steinbach Regional will face the Garden City Fighting Gophers in the semifinals at the Provincial High School Baseball Championship in Glenboro. La Broquerie’s Ecole St. Joachim Braves lost both round robin games and failed to qualify for the playoffs.


Steinbach Regional lost both round robin games at the Provincial High School Fastpitch Championship in Ile des Chenes. The Sabres fell 7-2 to the Vincent Massey Trojans and 13-2 to the Virden Bears. The Sabres lost their playoff opener 10-8 to Prairie Mountain and were eliminated.


Both SRSS teams were eliminated Friday at the Provincial AAAA High School Soccer Championships in Steinbach. The SRSS boys lost 3-2 to West Kildonan in the quarterfinals and 2-1 to Fort Richmond in the consolation semifinals. The SRSS girls lost 9-0 to the Vincent Massey Trojans in the quarterfinals and 9-0 to the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes in the consolation semifinals.


The 25th Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Banquet takes place today in Morden. T.G. Smith, who organized Little League baseball in Steinbach in the mid-1950’s will be inducted posthumously as will Todd Smith. Also to be inducted are Keith Carriere and Jeff Bouchard of Winnipeg, Laurie Langrell of Warren, Patti Hacault of Holland and Corey Billaney and Junior Brake of Boissevain, The four teams to be inducted are the 1953-56 Norwood Community Club Juvenile and Junior teams; the 2006-2015 Minnedosa Mavericks teams, the 2009-2013 Reston Rockets teams and the 1966 Hamiota Royals Juvenile team.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes lost 5-4 to the Lake Country DockHounds. Marcus Chiu singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth for the DockHounds. Winnipeg designated hitter Dayson Croes had had four singles and extended his hitting streak to 16 games.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers lost their pre-season finale 28-16 to the Saskatchewan Roughriders at IG Field. Rookie quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome took over from starter Dru Brown in the third quarter and capped off a nine-play 70 yard drive with a five-yard touchdown pass to Amare Jones. Jordan Salima had the other Bombers major on a four yard run 1:40 into the fourth quarter. Today is cut down day as head coach Mike O’Shea and his staff have until 10 p.m. to set their week one roster. Winnipeg will open the 2023 CFL season next Friday at home against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.


Doug Penner of the Steinbach Fly-In Golf Club lost on the second extra hole to Lyle McKenzie of Niakwa in the round of 16 at Golf Manitoba’s Provincial Men's Match Play Championship at the Glendale Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg. Kate Gregoire of Quarry Oaks will meet Clara Peake of Binscarth today in the women's quarterfinals.
