Steinbach Regional will meet the Lord Selkirk Royals Monday night in the final of the Provincial AAAA High School Varsity Girls Volleyball Championship at the Investors Group Athletic Center on the campus of the University of Manitoba in south Winnipeg. The Sabres defeated the College Jeanne-Sauve Olympiens 19-25, 25-23, 25-15, 20-25, 15-10 Wednesday night at the U of M. The Royals swept the Vincent Massey Vikings of Brandon 25-17, 25-15, 25-19 in the other semifinal.


It’s day one of the Provincial A, AA & AAA High School Varsity Volleyball Championships. Steinbach Christian & Niverville boys along with Niverville girls are at the AAA championships in Dauphin. Landmark is at the AA boys championship in Ile des Chenes hosted by the Gabrielle Ro Les Roy. Green Valley and Gabrielle Roy are at the AA girls championship hosted by the Lac du Bonnet Chargers. Pointe des Chenes is at the Provincial A boys championship in Fisher River.


Steinbach Regional scored five second period goals en route to a 6-4 victory over the J.H. Bruns Broncos at the Southdale Arena. Dominic Rooney had a pair of goals for the SRSS while the rest went to Jude Plett, Colton Wiebe, Preston Perreault and Terran Perreault. The Sabres snapped their three-game losing skid and improved to 4-6 in the Winnipeg High School Hockey League’s Platinum Promotions Division.


The Eastman Selects scored five first period goals and defeated the Thistles 10-4 in Kenora. Caylb Moore had a hat trick for the Selects. Jeremiah Warkentine and Kellen Sichewski added two goals each and singles went to Luc De Gagne, Grayson Slaney and Kasen Mateychuk. Eastman netminder Samuel Fontaine made 22 saves. 


The Ste. Anne Aces and Portage Islanders were winners in the SEMHL. Cody Fowlie had a goal and two assists as Ste. Anne defeated Winkler 6-1. Braden Purtill, Miguel Rondeau, Owen Blocker, Matt Bailey and Tanner Harms also scored for the defending champion Aces who improved to 6-0 on the season. Mark Hildebrand had the lone goal for the hometown Royals. Robby Moar scored twice and Linden McCorrister had a goal and two assists as Portage downed Altona 5-2. Chance Dickenson and Tanner Lesann also scored for the Islanders. Haydon Friesen and Justin Augert replied for the Maroons.


The B.C. Lions will host the Ottawa Redblacks in a regular season game in Victoria next season. The game, dubbed ``Touchdown Pacific'', will be played Saturday August 31st at Royal Athletic Park. It will be the sixth instalment of the CFL's ``Touchdown Series'' of neutral-site games, but the first in Victoria. The other five were held in the Atlantic provinces.
