Luke Mistelbacher scored a shorthanded goal late in the first period and a power play goal six minutes into the second as the Eastman Selects downed the Winnipeg Bruins 5-2 Thursday night at the Sun Gro Centre in Beausejour in game one of their best-of-five Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League quarterfinal. Trey Sellen also scored twice for the Selects. Isaac Gordon had the other Eastman goal. Selects netminder Andrew Blahy made 51 saves. Game two goes Saturday afternoon at the Southdale Arena.

 

The Lorette Comets are one win away from advancing to the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League final. Derik Cook had a goal and an assist as Lorette defeated Niverville 5-1. Liam Foster, Troy Beauchemin, Blake Noble and Noah Keating also scored for the Comets who lead the best-of-seven semifinal three games to none. Ryan Brown had the lone goal for the Clippers. Game four goes Saturday night in Niverville.

 

Greg Meireles and Evan Polei both had a goal and two assists as the Manitoba Moose defeated the Rockford IceHogs 7-2 at Canada Life Centre. Mikhail Berdin made 25 saves in net for the Moose.

 

Kelia Haskins of Edward Schreyer School in Beausejour lost her opener Thursday at the Provincial High School Curling Championships in Hamiota and Kenton. Haskins fell 9-8 to Bailey Mangin of Swan Valley and will meet Sarah Morris of Oak Park on the B side. The Provincial Mixed Doubles Championship begins today. Colin Desaulnier & Lauren Evason of Gabrielle Roy are representing Zone 13 and will meet Jace Guilford & Alara Krahn of Pilot Mound in their first of three round robin games at 3 p.m.

 

The Steinbach Regional varsity boys basketball team will play for a South Central Athletic Conference championship banner tonight. The Sabres meet the Dakota Lancers in Winnipeg in the SCAC final. The Lancers beat the SRSS 80-45 & 86-53 during the regular season schedule.
