This is tax deadline day in Steinbach. Brian Hrehirchuk, the city's Senior Manager - Finance, says the deadline for payment is at 4:00 Monday afternoon. He outlines the amount the city will collect this year.

"The total taxes that will be collected are just over $32 million, with 47 per cent, or $15 million of that being municipal taxes. The remainder (education taxes) goes to the Hanover School Division and the province."

Hrehirchuk says, historically, 85 to 90 per cent of property taxes in Steinbach are paid by the deadline. He notes there is a penalty of one per cent per month on overdue amounts.

Hrehirchuk says more and more people are paying their taxes through their financial institution, but some still come to city hall in person.

"It's getting less and less, the line-ups on deadline day, but there are still a significant number of people who come in on the last day or two to pay at city hall."
