With Manitoba's sunflower crop maturing quickly, the decision to dessicate or not will have to be made soon.
Grant Fehr is purchasing manager at Keystone Grain in Winkler.  He says many producers have been torn over the issue, but he feels there are a number of benefits to dessicating sunnies.  They include limiting stalk breakage if a rain or windstorm comes along, also dessicating usually means you can begin harvesting sooner.  Fehr notes the sunflower crop in the Red River Valley and eastern Manitoba is in slightly better shape than the southwest.
Overall though, he says the crop is in very good condition.
