The Telus Cup West Regional Hockey Championship in Steinbach is getting very positive reviews. It took place this past weekend with teams from Saskatchewan, Northwestern Ontario and Manitoba. Tournament chair Lyle Morin says he was told over and over again during the weekend what a great event it was.

"It was a huge, huge success. We had a lot of compliments from all four teams, the game officials and all the representatives from the different branches; Hockey Saskatchewan, Northwestern Ontario as well as Manitoba. They were very pleased with the amount of volunteers that we had and the overall hospitality shown by Steinbach."

Morin credits the success to a strong core committee and great support from throughout the region.

"Laura Oswald from Steinbach, Karen Cruise from Steinbach and Angela Janz from Niverville, between the four of us, we put in a lot of long hours planning this from, pretty much January on. Then there's the support from Steinbach, the volunteers, Steinbach Minor Hockey, Beausejour Minor Hockey, Lac du Bonnet, Pinawa and Grunthal, they all came out and gave us a lot of support. A tournament like this can't be held just anywhere. You need the local support, you need the surrounding areas to also buy in, but you need a strong volunteer base and Steinbach tends to always come to the plate with that."

He also gives a big shout out to the Steinbach Pistons for all their help before and during the tournament.

Proceeds from the Telus Cup will go back to the various minor hockey associations based on the hours put in by their volunteers.
