Niverville’s Catie St. Germain to sing national anthem at Grey Cup
Entertainer Catie St. Germain of Niverville says she’s still wrapping her head around the fact that she’ll be singing O Canada at this year’s Grey Cup. The country artist says she’s known for a couple of weeks but wasn’t allowed to share the news until now. “They reached out to me by email and I thought it was a joke,” she laughs. “It took a bit to finalize everything, but once it was official, I just couldn’t wait to tell everyone.” A national stage St. Germain will perform the anthem live on national television before the championship football game on November 14. She says it’s both thrilling and nerve-wracking. “I’m so excited, but I’m also nervous because it’s live TV. You just want everything to go perfectly.” Her rendition will be bilingual, sung in both English and French, a nod to her roots. “I went to school in St. Pierre and did French Immersion for years,” she says. “It’s a bit rusty, but I’m working on it and I hope to make Manitoba proud.” Representing Manitoba The singer has been steadily building her career across Canada’s country music scene, performing original songs and showcasing her powerful voice. “I took a leap of faith moving from cover songs to writing and performing my own music,” she says. “You never know where that will take you. If my career ended after this, I’d be okay. This is such a big one.” Soaking in the moment While she’s keeping details about her performance under wraps, St. Germain says she’s enjoying every part of the process, including picking what to wear. “I’m reaching out to some Canadian companies to collaborate. I always wear a hat, but for the anthem I’ll take it off, it’s part of the moment,” she says. Grateful for the support pouring in from across Manitoba, St. Germain adds she’s determined to make her hometown proud. “The love and support have been overwhelming in the best way. I’m just so grateful, and I’m going to soak it all in.” -With files from Carly Koop.
