Dig in for a great cause at Pansy’s Garden of Eden
A small community garden in Pansy is calling for extra hands to help dig up thousands of pounds of potatoes this Thanksgiving season. Mel Kachur, who runs the Garden of Eden just south of the Pansy Hall, says Monday will be a full day of harvesting as they prepare to donate at least 1,000 pounds of potatoes to Steinbach’s Helping Hands food bank. “We supply the hoes or you bring your pitchfork,” Kachur says. “We’re going to harvest potatoes on Monday from nine until five.” A community effort Kachur says volunteers won’t need much to join in — just themselves. “We have pitchforks and hoes here.” Lunch will also be provided, with cheeseburgers and other food served around noon. Kachur’s Garden of Eden grows Norland red potatoes and Adora potatoes, a low-starch variety suitable for diabetics. Much of this year’s crop was made possible thanks to donations from Kroeker Farms in Winkler. The garden has already supplied produce to several organizations, including Agape House, Siloam Mission, Steinbach Family Resource Centre, and local soup kitchens. Sharing the bounty Kachur says the harvest isn’t just about food — it’s about community and gratitude. “We fight hunger and we want to share our bounty,” he says. “We like to help God feed his people.” Volunteers are invited to join the “Pansy Ukrainian Hoedown” potato harvest on Monday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 2106 Road 33E beside the Pansy Hall. Everyone who helps out will get to take home some potatoes. -With files from Adi Loewen.
