Easter Journey offers interactive story and egg hunt at local greenhouse
A family-friendly Easter event focused on both fun and learning is set to take place this weekend. Dorinda Penner from Sunshine Greenhouse and Garden Centre says they will host their annual Easter Journey on Saturday. “It is wonderful. I love Easter. I love all our holidays, but I also love to tell the Christian aspect and why we celebrate these holidays. It's important to me.” Penner explains that with the space available and the opportunity to share the message, the greenhouse is the perfect setting to welcome children to the free event. “We walk you through the crucifixion and resurrection story in a fun, childlike manner with some puppets and interaction with the kids. While we're doing that, we have all kinds of other little bunnies hiding treats throughout the greenhouse.” She adds that after the presentation, children can search for Easter eggs labeled with their names. “My joy is watching some of the older children help a younger child find their egg. Because when they can't find it, sometimes you get a little frustrated when things don't go exactly the way you want. When someone else helps and says, ‘Oh, what's your name,’ and they help you find that egg, it's the sheer joy for me of that.” Penner says organizers are preparing around 150 eggs this year, noting that all treats will be dairy- and nut-free. “Because over the last 10, 15 years that we've been doing it, [we have] anywhere between 80 and 150 [children]. It's weather dependent to a degree, and there's other events around our community that are wonderful events as well.” Overall, she says the event is a meaningful way to share the story and significance of Easter with children. While pre-registration is not required, Penner encourages families to arrive early to sign in, as each child’s name is needed for the egg hunt. “They can show up anytime after 9:30 in the morning, register, and stroll through the greenhouse and get ready. At 10 o'clock sharp, we'll start the story.” The Easter Journey takes place April 4, inside Sunshine Greenhouse and Garden Centre. With files from Corny Rempel
