Landry, Green lead Pistons to win over Monarchs
Steinbach's Brody Green had a goal and two assists, while Mason Landry scored twice, propelling the Pistons to a 5-2 win over the Winnipeg Monarchs on an emotion-filled Wednesday night. Holding back tears Before the game, the Steinbach Pistons welcomed back longtime volunteer Tasha Wiese, who recently battled through an illness that cost her her hands and her legs. That didn't stop Tasha from heading out to center ice and dropping the ceremonial puck. Fans inside the Southeast Event Centre stood and applauded her strength, and it was very emotional for everyone, especially for Tasha and her loved ones. Starting on time With the game underway, the Pistons quickly were sent to the penalty box, but the group dug in and killed off the opportunity. They used that momentum to grab the lead. Making his debut for Steinbach was Marek Miller, the play-making 19-year-old, who showed off his elite hands, weaving through the Monarchs' defenders and putting a puck on goal. Evan Gradt tipped his shot, but the Gradt tip was heading wide until it glanced off Brody Green, who had fought his way to the net. For Green, it was his 3rd goal of the year. Mason Landry would increase the lead, driving to the net with intent, and tipping a perfect point shot from Luke Bogart to extend the lead to 2-0. Also making his Pistons debut was 19-year-old defender Rory Gilmour, and he managed to pick up the secondary assist. Winnipeg refused to go away, and they would take a two-on-one rush and convert, cutting the lead to 2-1. Scary scene Less than a minute after the goal, the Monarchs were rocked when Maxwell Hoey was put into the boards by a hard, clean check, but the awkward angle he went in caused the jarring hit to injure Hoey to the point that both trainers were called out. Eventually, the paramedics came to load Hoey onto the gurney. The great news was that Hoey seemed to be responsive and even waved at the crowd, letting them know he would be okay. Because of the injury, the game was paused with just over three minutes to go in the period, and the decision was made to start the time after a break. So the teams finished the first period before the teams started the second. Ending in style In the final minute of the period, Landry would strike again, as the opportune sniper scooped up a loose puck, walked in, and buried his second of the night to bring it to 3-1. Cullen Ingebritson and Zhenya Miles assisted Landry's third of the season. So-so second On a power play, once again the Monarchs pushed, and this time, they were rewarded with a goal that cut the lead to 2-1. Steinbach would restore the lead thanks to Liam Doyle, as the 20-year-old put a puck on goal from the blueline, cashing in for his first of the year. Gilmour grabbed his second assist, while Green also picked up a helper. New goalie makes a statement Easton Thvedt made his MJHL debut for the Pistons on Wednesday night, and the 2007-born goalie was very, very strong. His best save of the game came in the second period, as he stretched out to make an unbelievable pad save, keeping his team in the lead. More offense The final goal of the game came less than a minute into the period. Brody Green put a puck on net that appeared to be tipped by Even Gradt, giving him 2 goals on the season, with Green and Miller each getting the assists. Game Notes Steinbach gave up a power-play goal, which led to Steinbach pushing themselves back into it., Austin Ball made 39 saves in the loss. Thvedt came up with a solid 15 stops. Steinbach's penalty kill was 2-3, while their power play failed in their lone attempt. Up Next The Pistons head out onto the road on Friday night to take on the Portage Terreirs.
