Walk planned from Dominion City as part of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. An event is being planned at Roseau River Anishinaabe First Nation to honour the day. Organizers say they are holding their annual walk, starting from Roseau Valley School in Dominion City and ending at Roseau River Anishinaabe First Nation. The walk starts at 10 am and is expected to take about 45 minutes. Mick Friesen, who is part of a grassroots group of individuals known as Steps Toward Reconciliation, says there is a residential school memorial that participants will be walking to. At that site will also be a free lunch provided, followed by a powwow demonstration. The ceremony is expected to wrap up at around 2:30 pm. Friesen says the importance of events like this one is relationships. "And the Steps committee has been wanting to make connections with people at Roseau River Anishinaabe First Nation," he says. "By having a walk like this, we are showing solidarity with people. And we are wanting to be in touch with the history of this place we call Canada. And this is one of the ways that we can learn about that." RCMP, Manitoba First Nations Police Service, and the RM of Emerson-Franklin Fire Department have been invited to escort the walk. Transportation will be provided back to Roseau Valley School, following the walk. Also, orange shirts will be provided for all participants. Fireworks are scheduled for 8 pm at Ginew School to end the day.
