*Update* Flooding closes TG Smith Arena for up to two weeks
Flooding is causing problems in Steinbach, including at the TG Smith Arena. Updated story posted on September 12 at 2:30 p.m. Russ Dyck, the City of Steinbach’s Parks and Recreation head, confirms that heavy rainfall has caused flooding in the rink. “We had about probably four or five inches throughout the building, so including dressing rooms and lobby and so forth, ice surface. We have lost the ice surface, so we're in the process of cleaning that up.” He says no permanent damage is visible and that work to install new ice will begin in the coming days. “We're kind of expecting perhaps up to two weeks in total downtime, but we're hoping to make it a little quicker than that, obviously.” Dyck notes that rebooking's can be done through the Southeast Event Centre. “They'll try their best in terms of accommodating, but unfortunately there will be some lost ice times.” Original story posted on September 12 at 10:27 a.m. The Steinbach Minor Hockey Association (SMHA) notified hockey families of the situation. “Due to the heavy rain last night, the TG Smith Arena has unfortunately been flooded once again and will be out of commission for up to two weeks,” says Administrative Assistant Jacqui Plett. Because of the closure, SMHA is adjusting its schedule. The development camp planned for today, September 12, is cancelled. “We are working to reschedule these sessions for Sunday evening and will confirm as soon as possible." SMHA is asking families to remain patient during the changes. “Please hang tight as we work through the necessary changes to the rest of the schedule. We will send out an updated version as soon as everything is finalized.” The Southeast Event Centre has not experienced any flooding. The extent of the damage at the rink is still unclear, and more information will be shared as it becomes available.
