Firefighters rescue vehicle after Hanover roads flood
The Rural Municipality of Hanover is mopping up after unconfirmed reports of six inches of rain overnight. Wes Fehr is Manager of Works and Operations. He says Mitchell was definitely the hardest hit in the municipality, with some rain gauges showing six inches. Fehr says other parts of Hanover received less than an inch. "The water runoff looks like it's been mostly concentrated from just south of the 52 around Mitchell, going towards Steinbach, and probably, I would assume, that it's further to the east of Steinbach than as well," explains Fehr. As of Friday, at 9 am, Fehr says there were about five or six roads that were closed because of water running overtop. His guess is that the water will start receding by noon, to the point that some of the roads can reopen. Fehr says by late Friday afternoon, most of the water will probably be off the roads. Fehr says the road closures are throughout the municipality, and not only in one particular area. He notes that what is fortunate about this rain event is that it fell near Hanover's drains. Fehr says it was a very concentrated area that got hit, and a few of their drains are now running quite full. Hanover Fire Chief Paul Wiebe says his crews rescued a vehicle submerged in water Friday morning. This happened along Road 32E, about two miles north of Highway 52. Wiebe says the vehicle was under water, but there was nobody found inside. The call came in at 7 am. "Just a word of caution for motorists out there, as the water does flow through the municipality down the drains, it is running over some roads, we've had some situations this morning where cars were trying to pass through these areas where the water was running over the road, they have been left stranded or washed off the road," says Fehr. "So, word of caution when getting to these areas, best is to avoid them and turn around and go around a different way." Meanwhile, Fehr says there have been some reports of flooded basements in Mitchell. As of 9 am, he has not heard of any flooded basements in Kleefeld, noting the water issues in that community do not appear as bad as in previous rain events. If there are flooded basements due to sump pump issues, Fehr reminds residents that this is something they need to bring up with insurance. However, if there are road issues or street flooding, Fehr encourages residents to contact Hanover's Public Works department at 204-346-7129. Overall, Fehr says it does not appear that this rain event is as significant as the one that hit the area last September. He notes it is more of a concentrated area this time around, with probably a little less rain.
