SBC students band together to fight flooding
For the second year in a row, The Steinbach Bible College (SBC) men’s dormitory has flooded. Drenched dorms “We were quite concerned,” says Dave Reimer, president of SBC. The heavy rainfall Thursday night left Steinbach and area with roughly 100 millimeters of rain. “We had this very similar storm (last year) with six inches of rain hitting us in one day.” Community minded The 2024 flood forced the college to temporarily house its male students at the local Days Inn. Reimer notes the hotel staff were accommodating and welcoming. However, the displacement caused a major disruption to the semester. This year, thanks to quick action from students and less extensive damage, the men have been able to remain in their dorms. “We’re thankful for that,” he says. “When the water started coming in the basement, the guys all pitched in. They did whatever they could to move the water out as quickly as possible and saved us from long-term damage.” Coming soon Thankfully, SBC is moving its dormitories to a new, drier location at 333 Loewen Boulevard in Steinbach. Reimer explains the new dormitory will not have a basement at all, hopefully preventing future floods. Scheduled to open next year, construction is well underway. He notes the foundation has been poured, steel structures are in, and walls will be coming up soon. “We’re really excited about getting all that framed in so they can work on the inside in the winter,” Reimer says. Despite the challenges of back-to-back years of flooding, Reimer remains optimistic and grateful — for the resilience of the students, the support of the local community, and the new building that awaits.
