A new housing development is in the works in Steinbach. City council has approved First Reading of a By-Law to rezone 80 acres of land in the southwest corner of the city. Mayor Chris Goertzen says the parcel of land is located on the south side of Mckenzie Avenue, west of Coral Crescent.

"The entire 80 acres is being rezoned. That shows significant confidence in what's going on in our city. There's room for a lot of growth."

Goertzen is pleased that the developer has given the city a detailed plan that shows the locations for the various categories of housing from low density to medium density and where the parks would go.

"We've asked developers to look at a bigger picture idea of what they are going to create. Rather than going in small baby steps, they're going in large steps. They're saying, this is the concept and we are going to phase it in over time. We look forward to going to the Public Hearing on this and seeing this land developed."

A Public Hearing on the rezoning will be held May 5th at city hall.
