Two properties along Home Street in Steinbach may be rezoned to allow for a three storey residential building and parkade to be constructed.

The two lots are 274 and 268 Home Street, and they are located next to the intersection of Home Street and Hospital Street, with Bethesda Hospital located directly to the East.

The applicant, Kingdom Home Building Inc, hopes to create a multifamily building across the two properties.

The proposed building would have 32 residential units, 28 parking stalls, and 27 parkade stalls.

What the proposed development would look like

Steinbach City Council gave first reading to rezone the subject properties from RLD (Residential Low Density) to RMD (Residential Medium Density) to allow for the development of a multifamily building on the two sites.

Councillor Michael Zwaagstra says this would be a significant change in the neighbourhood if the rezoning went ahead.

"And so I am in favor of first reading, so that way we have an opportunity to hear from the applicant, and also give the neighborhood an opportunity to comment, and then the decision will be made at that time.”

Councillor Damian Penner says it will be great to hear the community’s thoughts on this rezoning.

“There is quite a lot of development and activity going on in that area right now and it would be good to hear from the public at a public hearing as to how they feel about this being added to the construction going downtown right now.”

The public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, March 19.
