The Chief Administrative Officer for the Rural Municipality of Hanover says this has been a bounce back year, following what was a very slow year for construction in 2015.

Through the first six months of 2016, there were 65 permits pulled for new housing starts, compared to 62 all of last year.

When you look at residential building permits, which includes such things as decks, additions and garages, there were 65 permits taken out through June 30th this year, compared to 70 for 12 months in 2015.

"We're quite excited that it seems to be an awesome rebound over last year's slow construction year," says Luc Lahaie.

As for residential construction value, the total for six months this year is $13.2 million, compared to $14.4 million for all of last year. By comparison, 2013 was a record year in that category for Hanover, when $35.5 million in residential permits were pulled from January 1st to December 31st.

Lahaie says Mitchell, Blumenort, Kleefeld and New Bothwell remain busy with new housing starts.

"We have four communities that are very active because there is a good inventory of residential lots that are available," notes Lahaie. "We're still struggling a little bit in Grunthal because there are no lots to be purchased."

Lahaie says the hope is that within the next couple of years, developers will look at Grunthal as a great place to build a home.
