Steinbach city council has outlined its capital works plan for next year including street reconstruction. Mayor Chris Goertzen says one of the proposed projects would see Elmdale Street rebuilt from Barkman Avenue to Kroeker Avenue.

"Elmdale Street has been worked on over the last decade or two in different times. Now, we have the final stretch where we'd like to renew both the street as well as the underground infrastructure that is in need of repair. So, next year, the preliminary plan is to tackle that, making that project final and finished."

Meanwhile, he says the asphalt overlay program would see Golfview Crescent and Eagle Place in Georgetown get new a new surface.

"The pavement improvement program has been really essential for our community to maintain our infrastructure, not only in new areas where we get new pavement but also in existing areas to make sure it is maintained. Georgetown is next (on the list), so we see both Golfview Crescent as well as Eagle Place being slated for improvements next year."

And Goertzen explains the third project is a significant expansion of Heritage Cemetery along Loewen Boulevard.

"The cemetery that the City of Steinbach does own and manage is getting full and so we want to expand that, making sure that service is available for all of our citizens. As well, it will have areas where cremated remains can be put in appropriate places. That will be an addition to the Heritage Cemetery this coming year."

Goertzen notes city council has approved a contract with SisonBlackburn Consulting to come up with the details and costs of these proposals before it makes a final decision on whether to proceed.
