The harvest has begun in southeastern Manitoba.  A number of combines have been spotted this week.  Fern Catellier is combining a quarter section of winter wheat southwest of St. Pierre.   He says it would have been nice to have more rain toward the end of the growing season but says it's still too early to tell what sort of impact the lack of moisture will have on yields.  Either way, he says it's going to be a much better year than 2005 when more than 1,000 of their 2,800 acres was left unseeded.  Catellier expects to begin cutting barley next week and wheat the following week.  Meanwhile, Alvin Falk who farms near Niverville is also harvesting winter wheat now and says the yield is very good but has no specific numbers.  He adds this is the earliest they have ever been out with the combines.
