Even though the conditions in eastern Manitoba are drier than 2003, the forest fire numbers aren't much higher.  Fire Program Manager Tom Mirus says they took a look at the numbers from this year and compared it to the numbers from 3 years ago, when they almost put fire and travel restrictions in place.  At this time in 2003, there were 131 fires in the eastern region.  Right now, that number is slightly higher at 133.  However, looking at records from their weather stations in the eastern region, it's much drier this year.  Lightening caused the only new fire Thursday in Manitoba.  A loaded patrol jumped on the blaze near Pine Falls and the fire was quickly contained.
