Traffic continues to be restricted on Mckenzie Avenue in Steinbach, west of Giesbrecht Street. A contractor is extending the city's sewer line to hook up the new Lexington Village subdivision. Phil Kalyta, the city's head engineer, says traffic restrictions will remain in place there until about mid-February.

"There's about two more weeks of work left before they get to the site (of the subdivision) and then they turn and go into the site. While they're working on Mckenzie, there'll be flag people there controlling traffic and there will be one lane on the north side of the street."

The construction segment that affects traffic on Mckenzie was only supposed to last for two weeks, starting in early December. But Kalyta says snow and cold weather hit the city just as the work was getting underway.

"When they anticipated this work in November, our weather was pretty good. But winter came fast and hardened things up a little faster than they figured. Then there was the normal two-week Christmas shutdown, that's right when we had a lot of snow and a lot of cold. It's a combination of the weather and the cold temperatures. There's a lot of frost in the ground and it slows down the crews."

He adds Mckenzie should be back to normal by mid-February.
