The corn crop is coming in perfectly for Blatz Fun Farm and Corn Maze.

Owner Gord Blatz says in the six years they have had the corn maze this is the best crop they have ever seen.

“I would say it is one of the more fabulous looking crops that we have seen here, the corn is fairly tall. We have ten acres of corn, but it has just done fabulously with the hot humid weather. You can almost hear the corn growing. We have an old combine parked in it, which is kind of a look out tower, and that thing is pretty much covered, it's hard to see.”

Blatz says they seed the maze a little differently than the average corn field.

“What we do here is cross seed. We seed north south and then we seed east west and that way it sort of gives you a cross, and when the corn gets a little more yellowish and more mature it is more dense so you can't see through the rows.”

Blatz says the first year he ran the maze he seeded the entire field in straight rows and when it dried up you could see a long way through the field.

Blatz notes they harvest the field at the end of October or beginning of November and turn it into silage for their beef cows. He says there isn't quite as much corn on the field as a normal crop.

“With a ten acre maze you are probably taking out an acre worth of trails in itself to start with. Then there is some stuff that gets trampled too.”

Blatz adds the goal of the maze is to have fun and entertain, not get a perfect crop.
