Many crops here in the southeast received a very timely rain again on Friday, but not all of them. Marc Hutlet of Marc Hutlet Seeds at Ste. Anne says things are getting dry again in the same area of our region as they did last year.

"We have some pockets that did not get some of that rain on Friday and so that's unfortunate. It's dry, especially to the south. I don't think Kleefeld got a whole lot of rain out of this last shot and I know south of there, towards Grunthal, was also getting a bit dry. Some of the corn was starting to get defensive during the day in terms of folding its leaves."

But Hutlet says many corn and soybean crops in the southeast look very, very good.

"The beans have had a little bit of an easier time so far than last year. It was cool and dry last year in June and it really set them back and they never really recovered. In the last two days here, they've greened up nicely and I think they're about to really take off. And corn, it's been growing five inches a day some days, it's just unbelievable. To have corn that might be waist high by July 1st is a great deal."

He notes grain crops also look tremendous right now. Hutlet adds the cooler weather this week will be ideal for canola, which is flowering.

"This will be a great week for it. There's not supposed to be anything in the 30's and maybe a couple of odd showers. That would be great for it to get back on track because +33 (like last week) is not what canola wants."
