Steinbach Mayor Earl Funk was asked Friday whether the city might be able to provide additional low cost outdoor recreation opportunities.

The Mayor held his Open Door session Friday afternoon and Funk says one resident suggested the city spend some money to build more basketball courts and outdoor rinks.

"A good mix of both summer activities and winter activities that would be low cost that would be directly in our neighbourhoods," adds Funk.

(Steinbach Mayor Earl Funk)City Council is planning its summer study session for July. Funk says it is there that council will begin building its Recreation Plan. He thinks neighbourhood parks is a good part of that plan.

"As we build facilities we also need to look at the other side, the low cost neighbourhood parks and make sure that we're always adding to those too," he says. "That we keep our neighbourhoods active."

Funk says he believes a lot of these sort of projects can probably happen relatively inexpensively, especially in areas where the city already owns land.

He suggests such parks would foster great relationships and build community.

"I think the advantage of a neighbourhood park is that it's in the neighbourhoods exactly where the children are," says Funk. "They can just cross the street or go in the backyard and start playing with their friends."
