The City of Steinbach has released a conceptual drawing of what Elmdale Street will look like in the future. Mayor Chris Goertzen says city council wants the area in front of the arenas and library to be for Steinbach what The Forks is to Winnipeg.

"It's really a major transformation of Elmdale. It'll be phased in over a number of years. It even includes a possible roundabout in the future at the corner of Reimer and Elmdale. It's exciting to see the concept and we'll see how it comes to fruition over the coming years. But certainly it's going to improve the downtown. It's going to make that street more user-friendly and pedestrian-friendly."

Goertzen explains why that area should be special.

"This area is right around Stony Brook. Stony Brook is where Steinbach started and it's what we're named after. (Steinbach is German for Stony Brook.) And so it's really important for council and our administration to see that this area is showcased in a positive light that's a friendly place to walk, a great place to meet people and continues to be an effective way of transporting vehicles from one part of the city to another."

Phase one of the project will start next year.
