The Fire Chief for La Broquerie says the fire near Zhoda is contained, though still burning.

Al Nadeau says it started south of Zhoda Sunday afternoon and they were called for help around 4:30pm. The fire destroyed one home but Nadeau says many other houses were in danger after it jumped Highway 12.

Nadeau says the Vita Fire Department was called in to assist and crews were on scene until 1:30 Monday morning.

"This morning it's pretty good," says Nadeau. "We tried to back burn as much as we could so that the whole area is safe in case the wind turns north."

As of 8:00 Monday morning, Nadeau says the fire remains within its burn perimeter. He says thousands of acres burned, mostly brush.

Nadeau says there is reason to believe the fire may have started beside a road. The cause is under investigation. He notes strong winds were a major factor Sunday.

Nadeau reminds residents that there is now a full fire ban in place for the Rural Municipality of La Broquerie.
