The Kleefeld Fire Department was called to a grass fire approximately 3 mile south of Steinbach on road 33E late Monday morning.

Fire Chief John Schroeder says the fire was started by a garbage fire.

"They were burning garbage in a burn barrel, something that they've been doing all winter, except that now we have this dry grass all around us so just a little spark ignited, and now we have a grass fire."

He notes the fire was under control quickly.

"We don't have much wind and neighbours came in and basically kept it in the open area, kept it under control, and right now we are just kind of putting out the fire in the bush and throwing some logs into the burn side to make sure it doesn't travel any further."

Schroeder says that the ground is still frozen and wet in most places, but the danger is in the dry grass. He says there is no need to panic, but encourages caution as it is no longer winter and there is a lot of dry grass and brush.
