18 months and still growing!

Pharmasave is now looking to hire a full-time or part-time Pharmacist and a full-time Pharmacy Assistant. Owner Scott Penner says that Pharmasave in Steinbach opened in September 2022, and currently employs less than a half-dozen employees. Business has been booming for 18 months now, which means the staff has to grow to keep up.

“Pharmacists are in short supply right now.” Penner continues. “And as an owner, I have been working in my pharmacy more than full-time since we started. Our regular customers have appreciated my dedication, but comment that I’m working too much! I love what I do, but I think I need a bit more help now with a full- or part-time Pharmacist.”

This is where you come in.

As the business continues to expand, Pharmasave in Steinbach is now hiring a Pharmacist and a Pharmacy Assistant.

As a Pharmacist, the successful applicant will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safe and effective delivery of pharmaceutical services. The job includes collaborating with healthcare professionals, dispensing medication, counseling patients, and ensuring that all work complies with industry standards and regulations.

Required qualifications include a BScPhm degree, a current & valid Manitoba pharmacist license, injection certification, and a minimum of one year experience with Kroll.

As a Pharmacy Assistant, the successful applicant will be responsible for the management of prescriptions, monitoring inventory, keeping records, and working alongside pharmacists to ensure the smooth operation of the pharmacy.

Required qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, knowledge of medical terminology and pharmacy procedures, and a minimum of one year experience with Kroll. Pharmacy technician certification is a plus. If you also happen to pride yourself on organization and attention to detail, this may be the job for you.

Hours for both positions can be either part-time or full-time- Penner is willing to work with you to figure out what would work best.

As a company, Penner stresses that Pharmasave is a co-op, a group of over 800 pharmacies across Canada that are all locally owned and operated.

“100% locally owned and operated… and not just on paper,” Penner emphasizes. “We make all our own decisions in regard to hiring, wages, hours. The store is truly our own, and because of that we’ve been really well received by customers who want to support local, independent business.”

Penner is proud of his business’ growth. But more than that, he’s proud of his staff’s growth and dedication. He noticed at the start that the Pharmasave name often led to new hires expecting a workplace similar to a chain, and the difference left them pleasantly surprised.

“When they’ve worked here for even a week, they say ‘what a different from the last place I was working at!’ They say that this place feels like family, that we care for each other, that we support each other, that the boss is great. Now, I’m not just tooting my own horn,” Penner laughs. “Creating a good work environment is very important to me.”

Penner states an important factor in creating this environment is not calculating metrics like productivity, where sales are measured per hour per day based on the man hours. It’s simply not important to him.

“We just want to make sure that customer service is maintained, hence the need for extra help.”
