A farmer in the Ste. Anne area says yields look to be average to slightly above average from crops that have already been harvested this fall.

Brian Dueck of Seine River Seed Farm suggests about 30 to 50 per cent of harvest is now complete in the area. He notes oats have been a bright spot with crops yielding quite well in most places.

On the flip side, Dueck says not a lot of canola has been combined yet, but says, for the most part, those crops look poor. He says the canola was damaged this summer from too much rain and too many insects.

As for the late-season crops, Dueck suggests they are looking okay. As of Monday afternoon, Dueck says he has not heard any reports yet this growing season of frost in the southeast. According to Dueck, it would be great if the corn could get one more week without frost. He adds the soybean fields are far enough advanced that frost will not hurt those crops much.

Meanwhile, Dueck says combines have largely been parked the last number of days in order for fields to dry. He notes the rain we received about ten days ago was not beneficial to any of the crops still out there.

Dueck says the ideal forecast going forward would be for sunshine and temperatures to stay above zero.
