The service road in front of East End Garage, Steinbach Towing and Ste. Anne Co-op, along Highway #52 east at Rockwood Street, will be paved next month. The pothole-filled road has been a source of frequent complaints. Phil Kalyta, the city's head engineer, outlines the schedule for the work.

"That work is scheduled to start somewhere in the middle of June. The paving should take about two weeks."

Meanwhile, Kalyta says the start date has not yet been confirmed for repairs at two Main Street intersections in Steinbach. Brick crossing bands at the Kroeker and Friesen Avenue intersections will be fixed after heavy wear and tear over the past 20 years. Kalyta says the contractor is determining whether he can finish the work before the Summer in the City festival. If that is not possible, he plans to start after the festival. Kalyta notes the tenders for the work came in lower than for some of the other Main Street intersections that were done two years ago.

"The concrete repair prices definitely are better. We got some very good prices for the Main Street work and they for sure are lower than the bids we got two yeas ago. On average, there's not as much concrete work out there and it's probably because there's not as much highway improvement work happening right now so I think the concrete crews are definitely hungry."

Elsewhere, repaving work began Tuesday on Giesbrecht Street south of Mckenzie Avenue and water main replacement started on Oak Crescent. Water main replacement on Wilson Street, between Goosen and Kroeker Avenues is set to start next week.
