Upgrades at the Hylife Centre in La Broquerie are complete just in time for the winter season.

Reeve Lewis Weiss says the compressors for making ice were fixed along with a manifold that was damaged and a roof leak. Weiss notes, while repairing the roof leak, they also installed a partial catwalk.

"So, they're putting all the proper supports in to do a proper catwalk upgrade in the future."

Weiss notes repairs and regular maintenance are expected with any facility.

"Some of the neighbouring municipalities, with the compressors, they've run into this. I'm sure with roofing every business and every building runs into it. It seemed to all happen at once, at least it did in this case, which was rather unfortunate, but we'll work with it and hopefully we will not have to do it again for a long time."

The municipality says they are covered under their insurance policy for a portion of the cost to the ice plant because there was structural failure causing an issue with the header tube. Meanwhile, the compressors were damaged due to a mechanical failure of a valve, and add they're waiting to hear back from insurance.

Weiss says they also installed LED lightening in the arena in conjunction with a Manitoba Hydro program. The municipality notes Hydro offers incentives for upgrades and are able to help finance upgrade costs, adding an organization may also pay the cost of the upgrades in full while still taking advantage of the incentives. Weiss says council decided to pay the upgrades in full and avoid any interest costs. The municipality adds council saved approximately $8000 in financing fees by paying the cost of the project in full.
