A couple from Richer is grateful to friends and neighbours after an incident Saturday.

Emergency crews were dispatched to a fire in Richer shortly before 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Chantelle Leclerc says she was at the rink in Lorette with her husband, Dave, and four children - Lorelei, Halle, Chassie, and Cole -  when her neighbour in Richer called to ask whether or not they were having a fire.

"He actually thought it was us having a bonfire. So he texted Dave and said 'is everything okay over there?' Dave had no idea what he was talking about and he said, 'what do you mean?' He said, 'well, your fire.' That's when it was like, 'what are you talking about?' So Mack (Leclerc's neighbour) showed us a picture and we had to go home and fix it."

She notes Mack called 911 and fire crews were dispatched.

"I didn't know if the house was on fire, I have dogs in the house. I didn't know the extent of the damage."

Leclerc says she was overwhelmed by the support she felt from the community in the Lorette arena.

"In an emergency situation, it was like everybody has your back. I was covered, my kids were covered. I was in a panic and they just said, 'we've got your kids, we'll get them dressed, we'll make sure they get to their (hockey) games. Go, go do what you gotta do and I hope everything is okay.'"

She notes, when she and her husband arrived at their house the fire department was putting out the fire on the fence, trees, and neighbour's shed.

"[Our neighbour's to the right], they were the ones that were burning stuff, because they were renovating. It was a really windy day so it kind of blew through to our yard and then my other neighbour on the left. It's the neighbour on the left that took the biggest hit because it was all those trees and he's the one that had the shed and some property damage."

Leclerc says she's thankful to her neighbour, Mack, for noticing the fire and calling 911, the Richer Fire Department for their working in extinguishing the fire, and to those who watched her kids at the Lorette arena while she drove home to find out what was happening.

Steinbach RCMP says no charges are being laid in the incident.
