The Director of Health Services at Bethesda Regional Health Centre says the warm weather this summer has really put pressure on their heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Jo-Anne Marion adds that is why they were very pleased to get the news last week that the province has committed to a multi-million dollar upgrade of the HVAC systems at the hospital. She explains good air and temperature systems are especially important for their operating rooms.

Jo-Anne Marion" When the humidity gets very high, it increases the risk with regards to infection, it affects the trays that are used and the linens that are used. The staff have to get dressed in surgical garb, those are not breathable materials, so it's very uncomfortable when it comes to the staff. And also, when we think of patient safety and staff safety, it does affect that."

She notes with the warm weather this summer, it has been a constant challenge again this year.

"With the high temperatures outside, our system has difficulty maintaining an adequate temperature and humidity levels inside."

Marion says it may seem like Bethesda in a state of constant upgrades but adds it's the same as a home, something that requires ongoing maintenance due to wear and tear.

"At Bethesda, there are always things on the list when it comes to maintenance. When we think of owning a home, it's the same thing, there is always some minor maintenance and major maintenance."

The HVAC upgrades are to be completed by 2020.
