The International Peace Garden is inviting the public to join them on Monday, September 11 at the 9/11 Memorial site to remember those who were killed on that fateful day in 2001. This is 22nd Anniversary of the events.
In 2010, Rotary International, the North American Firefighters Union and Manitoba Infrastructure donated the 9/11 Memorial that includes iron remnants from the collapsed towers at the World Trade Center. Today, local organizations host 9/11 remembrance events at the site, and invite the public to join them.
Close to 3,000 people in total died on that day through the course of the 4 plane crashes; the first plane flew into the north tower of the World Trade Centre in New York City, a second in the south tower some 15 minutes later, a third plane flew into the southwest side of the Pentagon near Washington, D.C., and the 4th plane crashed in Pennsylvania after its passenger attempted to overpower their assailants.
Hundreds of police and firefighters rushed to the aid of those injured at the World Trade Centre within a short time, and more than 400 police officers and firefighters were killed.
Close to 2,750 people were killed in New York, 184 at the Pentagon, and 40 in Pennsylvania. In addition, all 19 members of the terrorist group involved in the hijackings were killed.
If inclement weather, the 9/11 Ceremony will take place in the Conservatory foyer at the Peace Garden.
