RCMP officers in the West Hawk Lake area executed the largest marijuana seizure in Canada since 2015.

Last Friday, officers conducted a routine inspection of a semi driver's paperwork along the Trans-Canada Highway. The semi-trailer load, which originated in lower mainland British Columbia, was destined for southern Ontario. RCMP Superintendent Scott McMurchy says when officers started the inspection, they noticed something was off.

"When the officers stopped this vehicle to check the guy's paperwork, several discrepancies were discovered," noted McMurchy at a news conference in Winnipeg Friday morning. " The load was then examined by several officers in order to try and resolve those discrepancies. When the officers opened the trailer, they found 925 pounds of vacuum-packaged marijuana as well as 75 pounds of cannabis shatter, oils, and edibles hidden among the legitimate load of food products."

McMurchy adds the driver of the vehicle was arrested and the drugs in the semi-trailer were seized. 46-year-old Claudiu Huber, from Agassiz, British Columbia, has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and trafficking a controlled substance. The man has been released pending a future court date.
