Steinbach RCMP has received several calls in regards to a company going door to door offering to asphalt driveways.

Sergeant Joanne Ryll

Sergeant Joanne Ryll says not all businesses that go door to door are a scam. “We did get a call from somebody that was approached and our members went to check it out, but the business seemed legitimate. They did offer a quote, but they didn't ask for money up front.”

Ryll says there was a scam two years ago where a company was offering to asphalt driveways, but asked for money up front and now people are leery. “If you don't have to give money up front it could be legitimate. So far, we haven't had anyone that's paid in advance and nobody showed up to do the work.”

To protect yourself from a scam, Ryll says not to pay money up front for work that hasn't been done, and if you enter a contract, it's important to pay for the services once they are complete.

She notes if you are approached and you turn down their services, and have asked them to leave and they don't, they are then trespassing and you should call RCMP.
