The Regina Pat Canadians are going to the 2017 Telus Cup.

The Saskatchewan "AAA" Midget Hockey League champions capped off a perfect four days in Steinbach by defeating the Thunder Bay Kings 4-2 Sunday afternoon in the final of the West Regional Championship.

The Pat Canadians, who went 3-0 in the round robin, got on the board early as captain Alexander Kannok-Leipert scored a power play goal 2:22 into the first period.

"They play a really hard hitting, grinding game," said Kannok-Leipert. "We like to play fast and move the puck well and we just wanted to keep to that. I guess it worked today."

Payton Gorski extended Regina's lead to 2-0 on a delayed penalty to Thunder Bay as he beat Kings netminder Ryan Fanti with 15.6 seconds remaining in the opening frame.

Carson Denomie added another power play goal for the Pat Canadians midway through the second period.

Thunder Bay finally had reason to celebrate with 3:20 left before the start of the second intermission as Cody Bruchkowski scored to cut Regina's lead to 3-1.

The third period was scoreless until Kings forward Garrett Gammond redirected the puck past Pat Canadians goaltender Nathan Moore with 3:15 remaining in regulation.

All the momentum Thunder Bay had from scoring that goal disappeared from the T.G. Smith Centre when Evan Nicholas took a five-minute checking from behind penalty for his hit on Regina defenseman Ben Solomon with 2:24 left.

Jordan Kazymyra scored the final goal of the West Regional as he potted an empty-netter with 16.9 seconds on the clock.

"It's tough for sure," said Kings head coach Rob DeGagne on Sunday's loss to the Pat Canadians. "They're a great team. They come at you hard and they're fast. Our game plan was to stick around for a period-and-a-half, two periods and once the game slows down a little bit, we can kind of come back to our game. That was our game plan and it worked. Just unfortunate we took a bad penalty at the end and it kind of killed the momentum and killed our season. Hats off to them. They're a great team."

The Pat Canadians, who have won the National "AAA" Midget Hockey Championship four times, advance to the Telus Cup in Prince George from April 24-30.

"They're just a great group of young men," said Regina head coach DarrIn McKechnie during the post-game on-ice celebrations. "They have been right from the start. They've been so committed. They put up with me all year because I'm not the easiest coach to get along with sometimes. All that stuff - I know, that they know the reason now, because this is why. You pay attention to detail and you work so hard together for this one moment. We're going to get a chance to play another day. To say I'm proud of them, that's so low on the scale. It's over the top. I just can't say enough."
