The Prairie Basketball League wrapped up their Winter League in style this past weekend.

Commissioner Abram Razon says PBL just keeps on getting bigger and bigger. He notes “It's so awesome to see, you know, more people being involved, playing, watching and just being a part of the family.”

Razon says all of the action took place at in the Clearspring Middle School gym this past Saturday.

“The weekend was just a blast. We started off with the Future Star Celebration, our players from 6 years old to 10. We had a pizza party for them, we had a little bit of a giveaway, participation awards and then the championship games started with the juniors, then we had the high school, seniors 35 and up, an Open Elite Division.”

Razon says the day wrapped up with the Open A Championship, the highest level all-Filipino division.

Despite drawing a small crowd last year, Razon says the Open Elite Division Championship was the most well-attended game of the day Saturday. He notes this is very encouraging.

“It just goes to show you how much more people are attending the games and also how much the awareness is rising.”

It isn’t just a day of basketball, Razon says it is a celebration. He notes they do their best to put on a show.

"The biggest thing is that we have to keep on finding things to keep getting better and better. Whether that's the lighting from the DJ, the music, the player intros, having the [Winnipeg] Sea Bears there, we just keep on finding ways to add more, make it more of a show, make it more engaging for the fans. We even had some balloons for everybody, which was awesome to see.”

Now that the Winter League championship weekend is over, Razon says they have already shifted their focus to the upcoming Spring League.

“As soon as the weekend was over, the championship games were over, we got right into the planning of it. We do have a lot of changes we want to make in order to keep improving. The registration for Spring League is going to be over on February 23rd.
